The Homeless Service Center (HSC) will provide comprehensive services for the at-risk and homeless population throughout San Luis Obispo County. The facility is comprised of a one-story building accommodating up to 110 beds for single adults, families, and children. The building will additionally house a spacious multi-use room, laundry facilities, showers, a multi-purpose area, a library, computers, and offices for case workers and staff. The building will accommodate medical exam rooms, mental health facilities, a large dining room and a commercial kitchen.
There will be a play area for children, a recreation area, and pet kennels for the residents.
The design scheme provides a graceful façade to the community as well as privacy for the residents. Structured around a central spine, the plan acts as an organizing principal for the building, differentiating private areas from public ones, formal spaces from more informal ones, and incorporating a hierarchy of security. The floor plan reflects the team’s careful consideration of relevant issues including security, privacy, maintenance needs, and control. The design has a welcoming, non-institutional feel that extends throughout the project, including the outdoor landscape.
